J.R.,

He is refering to the choke rod on the passenger side of the dash board. This rod serves 2 purposes. You pull it up towards the seat back to choke the carburetor for starting the car, and for adjusting the air/gas mixture for starting, driving etc... This is done by turning the round handle.Clockwise leans out the mixture (Less gas, more air).Turning it counter clockwise richens the mixture (more fuel to the air). This is what you want.

Turn the knob all the way clockwise.(not hard, just until it stops turning) You don't want to damage your carb needle.Open 1 full turn counter clockwise to start the car.Once the car is started, turn it back so that its only 1/8-1/4 turn open off it's seat.In your case the suggestion is to open the knob to the left (counter clockwise) a little at a time 1/8 turn to richen the gas/air mixture to stop the pop.Don't open it too much, this may result in overheating the engine.1/2 turn open from fully closed is more than enough. In the mean time there are several good books out there on the subject.I would suggest a copy of the owners manual first and build your library as you go.Reading this Board is probably the best place for help.

Good luck,

Kevin Daly
