: : Can someone tell me about the c engine.

: : Also is the Riley cylinder head (3valves,4port)valuable,rare or powerful. When were they produced.

: :David,

: See http://users.aol.com/bpanews/modb.htm for an explaination of the "C" designation and the "B" engine in general.

: The four port Riley was an F head that had two overhead intake valves per cylinder and utilized the stock exhaust port in the block. It is considered one of the best cylinder heads produced for the A&B block in terms of performance. It replaced the two port Riley in 1933 and was produced into the 40's as a race head. Dan Price has made a batch of four port Riley reproduction heads recently. I think I read in New Secrets that a Price/Riley installed on a "B" motor was dynoed at 200+ horsepower (WOW, what a tour motor that would make!). See the posting a couple of lines below for the Secrets of Speed Society which contains information on the two port Riley reproduction head which will be coming out soon.

: If you are interested in more information on the Riley head and George Riley in general, there is a book called the George Riley Racing Scrapbook by Dan Iandola. I have the book but it is not next to my pc so I will have to get back with his address.

: A fellow that I have gotten parts from recently sold an origional four port Riley for around $3K and that seems to be the going price if you can find one... Its a little out of my realm. If you are considering purchasing an old Riley (or any other high performance head for that matter), beware. They origionally had about a 12 to 1 compression ratio new and since they were mainly race items, have most likely been milled any number of times. They might give the exhaust note an interesting "crack" but who knows what else.

: Best of luck,
: Charlie
