Hi Ken,
Your symptoms sounded just like mine except the engine stopping. Trucks had a problem with the universal joint at the end of the short drive shaft hitting the cap due to not enough clearance! This makes a loud clunk-clunk-clunk noise that comes and goes just as you described. Mine sounded like it was coming from the rear of the engine but was really farther back.

The fix was a shim provided by Ford and described in the Service Bulletins. THis shim provides for more clearance between the u-joint knuckle and the u-joint cap.

Good news is it is available from the Model A Works (owned by Tom Godish) in Portland OR. Call him and leave a message and request his catalog too. He has lots of AAnew parts.

Hope this does the trick for you.
Jim
