It's difficult to get details and closeups using flash photography when the flash is fixed into the camera - you're usually going to put too much light on the subject and will drown out the detail.

I try to avoid flash when photographing inside a car unless I'm a good distance away from the intended target.

Take the car outside on a nice day and try taking the pictures without flash.Or, as I sometimes do, get one of those halogen lights on a stand and point the light toward your subject area to light it up.You can even do this inside the garage; usually your camera's automatic exposure mechanism will adjust just fine.

Bottom line; experiment and see what works best.
