Water pump grease

I read that your suppose to grease the water with a special grease as so it doesnt leak into your radiator and plug things up. What is recommended for the fittings around the water pump shaft. Secondly, mines leaking a little, should I buy a rebuild kit? I see they offer them with stainless. Is this better. Thanks for the help.
