fuel shut off

I purchased a fuel shut off and when I tried to install it on my 30 coupe it turned out to have a sloghtly larger fitting that the orrigonal one into the tank. I put the old one back and tightned the thing up a bit but wonder why I am having this problem. Do you need to enlarge the hole in the tank to install the "orrigonal" shut off's? The part was made by Antique Ford Parts Thanks Ed
