: Can anyone recommend a good method for pulling the steering wheel off of the column on a '31? : Thanks, bobby, some years ago i made and used a "split collar" of aluminium to suit the contour of the prewar dodge steering wheels---this clamped together under the steering wheel and was provided with tapped holes for use with a common gear puller---scraps of leather between the steering wheel hub and the collar protected the finish on the wheel---it worked well, which i suppose it should, since it was merely a copy of a once-common tool. the same thing could easily be done for the ford, and i would think you could make the collar of a good hardwood--rock maple, say, or cocobolo wood, with, say, 1/2" through bolts. i think the thread protector for the ford would be best made in two pieces--a double-length 5/8-18 nut, and a short 5/8-18 capscrew with a, say, 1" or so length turned down to fit snugly in the bore of the steering shaft. this, i think, should minimise the chance of damaging the thread when using the puller. hope this helps carla |
