: Have aquired a pair of 1929 South Dakota License plates and would like to restore them for my roadster. They are rusty, a little bent up and have no paint left on them. Any advise on where to find out original paint colors, removing rust, staightening, or a commercial restorer.

1)Check with your local tax accessor/collector or DMV office to see if they have any historical information on the original plate colors. If you state has a "year-of-make" law which allows you to run original plates on antique vehicles then they will have this information.Texas has a nice booklet that the local t a-c/DMV office let me copy that told a history of license plates in the state.
2) There is a group of license plate collectors, check with Dean Powell in Lockhart, Texas (512)398-7226.He belongs to this group and may be able to get you in touch with someone closer to you that is a member and has the information you need.Dean is nearly all the swap meets in Texas and has a good selection of plates.
3) For restoration give Rod Hemmick a call at (210)822-9040 in San Antonio.I have seen his work at some of the swap meets and it is very nice.
John
