SPEEDO

The speedo in my car has never worked so I took it out and founda broken cable, I tried to turn the speedo by hand using the old cable every thing works but it is very hard to turn. I don't want to spend $ 80 plus if I can get the old one working How much drag should there be? Is there a way to lub the "magnet shaft"? Will soaking it over night in kerosene help/hurt ?
