The iron field plates must have some residual magnetism to start the charging process. Bob's instructions will get the job done. Actually, just install the generator, and the 1st time the cutout points close, the generator's field coils will polarize correctly. be sure there is a good case ground connection to the engine & frame. Never run the generator without a load on it.
