Sounds like blow-by to me.Bottom line, the "A" has a problem with Head gasket sealing which may be aggravated by warping, and by cracking in the top of the block, and on the sealing surface of the head.

I did have a major problem years ago with a J.C. Whitney replacement radiator, BUT it was a two-row, and couldn't handle the through-put at speed. As has been pointed out, the core is not the determining flow factor, the plumbing is. Cylinder pressure leaking into the cooling system will drive water out quicker than anything else, and rapid overheating ina "Pulling" situation with heavy water loss is a typical indication of head gasket leakage, or block problems.

Original radiators are better to re-build since the tanks and structure are much better that repros.Old cores may have fin separation from the tubes so that heat transfer doesn't occur resulting in a tremendous loss of efficiency.
