Hi folks--
Thanks for the comments and suggestions.They made me go back to take a closer look at my axle and what came out of it. I rechecked the king pin holes and they appear round... or at least so far as I can tell without more precision measuring tools. (My first guess at being oval was just that, a guess. I suppose that's why people make tools...) What's even more interesting is that they don't look worn. The shims that came out may have been home made, but if they are, they are pretty good. Each king pin was held tightly in the axle by one brass shim that is .015" thick, about 2" long with a tiny lip at one end, and about 1/3 of the king pin circumference in width. With the shims in place, both the old king pins (which look pretty darn good and measure to .814", just like the new ones) and the new ones I bought seem like they would go in fine and stay snug.I guess before I give up on the axle I now have -- it already has the perches out and is nicely painted -- I'll do a little more research and post what I find here.Oh the opportunities for learning that this hobby provides us! Thanks again.
