G'Day Ken,
Any bare metal should have a primer coat appliedbefore the top coat or finish colour is applied even though certain paints are available for special applications which are primer finish coats . A red oxide primer must be one of the most commonly used bases for most steel structures, including sea going vessels, which are exposed directly to the weather, but you should be careful when buying any primer as there are those designed specifically for enamel type paints which will crinkle up & peel as soon as a lacquer based paint is sprayed onto it, which will definately endear you to your sandblaster. Otherwise the answer to your question is yes.

P.S. Have you checked the housing for hair-line cracks Ken??.

: I am having a replacement flywheel cover sandblasted as we speak. After it is done...will I have to use some type of primer on the housing before I spray on my Model A engine paint? I have been advised by one fellow to just spray the engine paint on without anything else. This does not sound right to me. What say ye?
