Ye says primer is goot! Especially if you use rattle cans for the engine color.
Rattle can primer is 99% solvent, 1% solids (seems like it) recommend going with the body shop self etch primer. If you don't have the sprayer, Eastwood's has good rattle can self etch primer. If the housing had a good oil soak might try to burn out the oil with a propane torch first.
