Closed car top materials today (including course long-short grain) are made of vinyl. To clean use a soft nylon bristle brush and a mild solution of dishwashing liquid and water. Wipe clean with a frequently rinsed towel. For stubborn dirt or oil, an occasional use of 409 cleaner works well and won't hurt the vinyl.
Any of the modern vinyl presevatives will help as long as the top is CLEAN first. Dirt and sun are the largest contributors to deterioration. If the car is parked inside most of the time then the presevative will help it last 25 years instead of a mere 20 years!!! Estimated of course!
