Bill,

Most people don't realize that some protrusion is proper. The original spec provides for a protrusion of .03125" (1/32"). Ford made almost everything in fractional dimensions. The remainder is obviously from surfacing. The only two things to watch for: Be sure you have 1/3+/- counterbore remaining in the cylinder head (originally .093" +/-), and with the large bore it is best to have pistons with a fairly large taper. Set the head gasket in place and be sure the pistons clear comfortably. Also align the gasket with the head to be sure the pistons will align within the counterbores of the combustion chambers. That head SHOULD be fine if it is original Ford.

Good luck,

Marco
