RE; Pump hole plug

It was too simple! I'm rebuilding my engine and came to the point of installing the 50 cent pump hole plug. I have set the oil pump in place and I fiqure this little plug should screw into the hole on the side of the block enough to retain or hold the pump in place. As I screw the plug in it only goes about half way and binds up. As I found my A in a junk yard it didn't have a plug in the hole. It had an oil guage from that era with a fitting that screwed into the hole. The guage is marked oil and reads from 0 to 75. Reading Snyders parts catalog on the plug it says in part" You open this to see if your pump is pumping". Is the plug used just to fill the hole or is it to retain the pump in place? How far does the plug screw in ? I don't believe the oil guage was used to get a true oil pressure, but any fluctuation in a reading would probably indicate that the oil pump was working. This was a stock engine that I don't believe would have had oil under pressure. Has anyone seen such a setup? Thanks in advance for the much needed input as I can't locate an article that covers
this little area.

Again Thanks,Fred M
