crankshaft timing gear keyway, balancing cost

Anybody know what the correct position of the keyway is? (Or, how to positively ID an opriginal gear for comparison?) We're getting ready to put another engine together...we thought we had an extra new crank gear but ordered one anyway...we did have one but decided to compare the two. The keyway is located approximately between two teeth on one, and approximately under a tooth on the other. I didn't get around to measuring the difference, but it is considerable. The timing mark is in the same place on both of them. The one that seems more correct just came from Snyders, the other is of unknown origin. I say the one seems more correct because we ran into the same question with the other gear last time we put one together...we compared them to old gears we had and went with the closest (rejecting this one). However, I don't remember any of them being exactly the same. Thanks for any input!

FYI, balancing for the engine cost $150 at a local racing type engine shop. They were amazed that the crank and flywheel were almost perfectly balanced before thay started, but that was 'ol Henry for ya. (I was suprised because the crank had counterweights added and the flywheel had been lightened).
