: My '30 coupe has about 5 inches of free-play in steering wheel. What should it be? And what could be the problem?

Dick,Answer to first question is...if all mechanisms in the steering and suspension are as they were when new, the freeplay can be zero.Second question...any one or combination of all the steering and suspension components could be the problem.I would suggest you examine all of the sections carefully. If you find wear, fix that problem and continue till all the areas are renewed.Use as many of the original parts as you can.Replace with NOS if possible. If you are not familiar with the design and construction of the Model A, obtain one of the publications available on this WEB site. The five book set is very good, as well as the others listed. If you are not a member of a local Model A club, see if you can find one in your area. There is usually at least one member who can guide you through this project.
Have fun!
Paul
