: I have a block that was very rusted. I took it to my machine shop and asked them to check it out. They did and went ahead and bored it for oversized pistons so they would know if the bore would clean up. My guestion is how do I clean all the rust out of the water jackets and not hurt the machine work? It's real rusty in there.
:Thanks Larry

larry--you might try this--since the bores and bearings must
be protected--wipe them down with lacquer thinner to de-oil
them, then apply duct tape to all the important surfaces--
not masking tape !!!!--plug the oilways with hard wood
dowel material cut to fit and hammered in tightly--get one of those little hand sandblast guns--use glass beads or fine
garnet grit--blast down into the water-jackets as best you
are able--then blow out the grit with an air nozzle fitted
with 12" or so of 3/16 steel tube ( brake-line tube) and
inspect--repeat as necessary--then scrape into the crevices
with a long expendable screwdriver ground to a chisel point
and blast again--you will be amazed at the amount of sediment
and flake rust which will come out--however---be warned--
the life of the engine will depend absolutely on your complete
removal of the left over grit bits from the crank-case, oil-
ways, etc.--you might visualise each little grit bit as a
sentient malevolent demon--with an obsession for leading its
fellow demons on a ban-zai charge into your bearings.
