Bob,

I agree with Glen but would add one thing. You only need to shrink the metal if it has been stretched. As Glen said most of the time the dent can be 'popped' back into shape without any shrinking. If the metal has been stretched then it has become thinner and no amount of hammering will make the metal thicker, hammering can only make the metal thinner. Shrinking will cause the metal to 'pool-up' and therefore become thicker.
