How do they compare with the Zenith? My '29 Coupe has a Tillotson.

Bill

My experience with Tillotson is that it is a good carb with slightly better gas mileage than the original Zenith. In the past I got 18-20 mpg with the Zenith (unrebuilt) and 22-24 mpg with the Tillotson.

The downside to the Tillotson is that it is more complicated than the Zenith with a multiplicity of bolts that have a tendency to come unbuttoned and is a little prone to plugging with impurities in the gas. Also, the body (for most of the Tillotsons I've seen) is aluminum and tends to wear at the connection bolts to the intake flange and the choke and throttle shaft.

I am currently running a Tillotson but have a reworked Zenith waiting in the wings.I like the idea of returning to the comparative simplicity of the Zenith and I suspect that with the "jet resizing" techniques using numbered drills that have been published in the literature recently, even the poor "reproduction" jets can be made to function properly and will give improved mileage.I have yet to try this out, however.

Best regards,
Joe
