: Which side is up when installing the copper asbestos engine head gasket? Is it the folded over edge or the somooth side?In the Model A Ford Mechanics Hanbook it says to place the gasket with the rolled seam bottom down. The Bratton's catalog say the seam around the cylinder hole faces up.I am confused.

John, Try this simple approach.Find a diagram of the cylinder head nut tightening sequence. If you look at the #2 bolt location and match it to the copper gasket you will notice an area that is on the outside of #2 that is raised on one side, the head side and flat on the reverse side toward block.Make sure the head has not been surfaced and this area should be easy to locate. A little hint add gasket seal to the bottom of the new studs to help seal them.Make sure you check the height of the cylinder studs.
Best of luck,Regards, Fred Murphy
