The main reason I see for a driver is that 12 volts requires only half the amperage to do the same work resulting in lower voltage drops in the wiring which results in - brighter lights, and less sensitivity to contact resistance in the switches and plug connections.In general it's just less trouble than 6 volts, and in areas where it gets cold, and you still want to drive, there's much more starting power available.

Another thing is that 6v accessories are few and far between, and if you want a radio or CB for touring then 12V is a given (fortunately we don't generally need fuzz-busters).
