Notch in firewall

My '29 coupe has a square-cut notch in the lower firewall, starting about 13 1/4" from the driver's side and about 3/4" wide by 1 1/2" deep.(The firewall is angled at that location, so the notch is 1" deep in the lower leg and 1/2" deep in the upper.)I have seen similar notches on other Model A's, but I don't believe it was done at the factory. Does anyone know what this notch is for?Thanks,
