If you really want to fix the problem rebuild the distributor with new bushings, one piece shaft, rotor, and cap. Then pull the side cover off of the engine and replace the driven gear assembly. Sounds like you've got wear all through the assembly and to do the job right and get a good running engine replace it all. Take a close look at the cam. If the corners are showing much wear you might want to replace it too but beware that the remakes sometimes have a score line that will cut your point block. So if you buy a cam run your nail around the cam like the point block would run and if you can feel a burr or a groove do not use it because it will eat up your point block. Been there/done that. Good luck.
