| : have 30 model a trying to start motor car in storage 7 yrs. Hi Mags:Brief Summary of Engine Preparation Events--(Not all Detailed Items Covered):
If engine was fine 7 years ago, & if engine turns over with crank or by pushing vehicle in gear:Move vehicle to a safe place away from buildings, cattle, and scary people; check for dirt dobber nests in carburetor and engine oil filler tube and remove nests if necessary; check under hood for wasps, check under front seat for snakes; drain oil; add 5 quarts oil through distributor opening in engine head; add water to radiator; check & clean spark plugs & set gap .035" if needed; with spark plugs removed, add approximately 1/4 cup Marvel Myster Oil in each spark plug hole and rotate engine several revolutions to oil valve stems; remove and clean points on fine oil sharpening stone, or buy new points & set points .018" -.022"; place few drops of oil in sliding cover of distributor oil tube,(driver's side of distributor), put a dab of vasoline on distributor cam;check & set timing; borrow or buy new 6 volt battery, clean terminals and install; turn on switch to see if points fire when opened and closed, (don't get shocked by coil wire), coil wire should fire when points opened and closed; grease two (2) water pump fittings,(grease rear fitting with soluble grease only); add few drops of oil to generator;oil throttle and spark linkage;add gasoline & open gas line valve in car under dash -- check for gasoline leaks and repair if necessary -- safety first; open carburator adjustment rod, (passenger side), open 3/4 turns counter-clockwise & pull out later to choke engine for a few revolutions; retard spark handle, (move upwards all the way), on left of steering wheel, pull down throttle lever slightly on right side of steering wheel; turn on ignition switch, pull out choke, & depress floor starter switch, and start with starter. If engine won't turn fast enough, push or pull vehicle to start initially.If engine pops, backfires, etc., valves are sticking.Stop engine if it continues to backfire after 15 minutes or so of running and allow engine to cool -- close gas line; pour 1 cup kerosene, (nothing else), in each spark plug hole, & with all plugs removed, turn crank very, very slowly for about 10 revolutions.Let engine set with kerosene for not less than 24 hours with plugs installed.Try starting again the next day -- if no improvement in running, probably will need to clean valves and valve stems. If it starts and runs well, drain oil again, (with kerosene), and fill with 5 quarts through oil filler tube. Please let us know what happened!
