G'Day Ken,
You've just got a lot of good advice from out there, especially from Bob B. & the point to consider is the slowing down of water flow or in laymans terms, the speed the water is travelling. Bob B quite rightly mentioned that restricting the flow decreases the chance of cavitation, but it also prevents the coolant from passing through the radiator too fast to cool down. To explain this, take a piece of steel which is too hot to hold & dunk it in & out of a bucket of water & on grabbing it you'll soon find there's not much change. However submerse it in the bucket for a few seconds & life is suddenly much more bearable with it clasped in your hands. The same applies to the water flowing through the radiator & this may be butonly a minor part of your problem, but a thermostat is definately a recommended "extra".
