Ken,

First let us look at the function of a thermostat. A thermostat stops the flow of the water while the engine is cold. When the engine has warmed up the thermostat opens and the cooling starts. As far as I know there is no added cooling due to the installation of a thermostat. In fact since the thermostat is usually installed between the water pump and the radiator it can cause less cooling by restricting the flow of the water to the radiator.This brings up a question.Is your car really boiling over or is it just overflowing because the water pump is moving the water too fast. It could be that removing the thermostat caused the water to flow from the water pump to the radiator too fast and you are getting overflow.
