The root cause of backfire is most generally oxygen in the exhaust system which normally enters at the manifold/muffler pipe joint unless there's leakage in one or more of the muffler joints."A"s are pretty inefficient beasts, and tend to pass through a lot of unburned fuel. That plus an air leak equals explosion. If the car also backfires while running, and runs rough, then air leaks in the intake system are likely - typically at the ports due to mispositioned gaskets, or manifold warpage.
