Dear Model A Fool

As I suspected, the "black art" is a little less black than most clutch rebuilders would have you believe. This is the essence of "technical intimidation" as we know it.

Carla's point regarding the machinery to *properly* (read cost effectively) rebuild a clutch and the capital investment necessary is a good one.Someone has to pay for the cost of the machines sitting there in addition to the college education for the kids and the food on the table. That money (or the lack of it) has also kept me from rebuilding my own engine as well. (Although I would like to and did have a guiding hand in it)But I don't regret the money I spent for the rebuild any more than I regret the money I put into a reconditioned clutch pressure plate. The net result was a restored engine and one I have total confidence in.(Except for the little problem with a bent crankshaft that I mentioned earlier, but that is another story.)

I guess the burr that really got under my saddle is the somewhat condescending attitude "the trade" sometimes has for outsiders (which we as Model A'ers are really.)I forget that people in the automobile service industry have to deal with the public at large: some of them like me want to be involved (probably a minority) and the vast majority would just rather "let the other man do it and write the check when it is done." I am not among the latter for two reasons: an overriding interest in things technical and lack of $.

Mike you are fortunate in being a bit closer to the trade center than most of us. And we are fortunate you are willing to share what you know with us.Thank you again for your help.(and humor)

Best regards,
Joe
