: I'm confused about restoration of the commutator. Some books say to undercut the mica separators after turning the commutator, while others say not to undercut. What's correct for the starter? Thanks in advance.

Neil,
The proper maintenance for a communtator is to turn it down in a lathe and then undercut the groves. This is done to remove any mica that may protrude above the communtator surface. The best way to accomplish this is to start with a 3-cornered file ineach groove, followed by dressing that using a hacksaw blade, and finish off with 00 sandpaper to eliminate any slight burrs.
Hope this helps
Doug
