i don't know if this is the best way to do the job, but i have
seen some of the old timers put in sheets cut to shape from
sheet felt 1/4 or 3/8" thick, adhered and then covered over
with hot tar, which sealed the felt so it wouldn't wick up
and hold water------maybe one of the modern sticky undercoat
materials would serve in lieu of the hot tar?
