Tim, I thought I would my 2 cents so this wouldn't look so much like a solo conversation. One gets noticed when one talks to himself....

My opinion is, regardless of what your dipstick says, 5 quarts at oil change is correct. An undetermined amount of residual oil remains in the valve chamber and dipper tray when you change oil. This means 5 quarts would overfill the crankcase. In looking at the Model A engine it becomes apparent that the upper half is cooled by water and the lower by oil. A little more would be assumed to be a good thing Martha. Your oil leak, if not from the rear main, is probably from the cork gasket that seals the pan to the rear main cap. This requires dropping the pan and redoing the gasket. Getting this right is an acquired talent so don't be deterred if you don't dry it up as well as you would like the first time. And remember, like a Harley, the only time a Model A does not leak is when it has no oil....

God Speed Under 50.

The Model A Fool.

: My 30 Tudor oil dipstick is 9 1/2" long from the bottom of the loop to the end of the stick. A previous owner decided to add one additional mark about 1" above the F mark.I have changed the oil by adding 4 1/2 pints as required.I have also changed the oil after removing the oil pan and replacing it.Les Andrew's Model A Mechanics Handbook advises me to add 5 quarts when a pan has been dropped.Soon, I ordered and received a new oil dipstick from Bratton's, part #A-6750 after measuring the new stick it is only 8" long. The markings on the new stick are 1/2" shorter than my original stick. Now my question to all of the Pro's. How MUCH oil goes into the Model A and what length dipstick is correct ? Also my A has anyways leaked to much oil from the rear main and flywheel/clutch housing.

: Please Advise, Thanks
