I used to be a big fan of this event.What a dream, driving across the US in your vintage vehicle, the folks meeting you in each town, the comraderie of the fellow racers etc, etc. Then we had Great Race Director Tom McRae come to one of our club meetings to give a program about the Great Race.That was all well and good.The route was to come close or possibly thru the small town where I live and I wondered if it was one or the other.I knew I couldn't get to either of the main stops on the route since it would mean several hours of driving to either one.I wanted to see some of the racers as they passed thru the nearby countryside. However, when asked what route would be taken between the two major city stops, Mr. McRae quite harshly and arrogantly replied that they didn't give out that information as the organizers didn't want people to come out and see the racers "as they drove by".I tried to explain that I would not be able to make either one of the rest stops but would still like to see the cars.His reply, "Too bad".
Oh well, its just one fan that was lost.
