Another way to deal with this is that of the two shifter forks, typically the one for 2nd and 3rd gears gets a lot more wear.

If you have any spare or idle transmissions, you can "borrow" the better looking of the two shifting forks.The two are identical except for orientation in the transmission case.Likely you can take the 1st and reverse shifter, turn it around and move it to the other side, and use it as a second and 3rd shifter.

Of course this leaves you with two shifter forks that likely need to be rebuilt, but if your transmission needs are not chronic, they can wait until later when you can formally rebuild two at once.
