Neil --

I recently completed rebuilding my transmission earlier this year, and went through all of what you are now encountering.If you will go back to the messages posted as of November 23, 1997, your topic was addressed at that time with a number of good replies.

In short, the rectangular opening in the fork should be squared away, which may mean building up the surfaces with a material, such as yellow facing brass, and using a milling machine to reshape the angles.(This assumes that you have access to a machine shop.)I used a clearance of .010" between the shifting ball and the side of the rectangle.I don't think that you want it any closer than that.Some responded that up to .030" was okay.
