: Is the Mitchell Overdrive a replacement for the present Transmission ?Has anyone had expierence with The Ryan or others ?Thanks for any input.

Bob,
Here in our club, our members have all but the Ryan overdrive units.I have, in my Town Sedan, the Borg-Warner unit from Burt Hiller (now Bill Swigert).I'd say we have about a dozen of these units in the club. They work very well. The only problem is that these are "used" units and as a result are subject to unkown wear. We've have had a few problems, but they were from low oil levels.Theserequire only the installation of a switch and a cable to engage the unit.Switching in an out of the unit can be done with a simple flick of a small switch.

The Mitchell unit is been purchased by 3 members. This is a very high quality unit and is all New, and you can get different overdrive ratios. It all mechanical, uses all syncronized gears and can be shifted on the fly. This is done with a lever on the floor.Reports from these members is all positive.

One member has the 4-speed tranmission unit.Other than the fact that the shift lever is moved back very slightly, you can not tell it from a stock appearence. It works super.Of course , gone is all the gear noise you get in a stock transmission and it is all syncro so no more double clutching necessary.Up and Down shifting is no problem. And again its "new " stuff.

As for me, I happen to like being able to engage/disengage the overdrive with just a flick of a switch on my shift lever. But that's justmy opinion, others may vary.So it looks like price is the differentiator. For approximation: B-W unit about $1000,Mitchellabout $1700, and the 4-spd about $2500.

I can tell you, which ever you pick, you'll notice a big difference in the driveability of your Model A.Have fun choosing.
Doug
