: : I am putting my timing cover on. What does the timing Pin Do?

: : I saw in a book that you should put this pin after you put the cover on and maybe line something up.

: : Any info on this subject will be appreciated.

: the timing pin is used to find tdc (top dead centre) of no. 1 piston, the manual will tell you how to set your spark timing thereby, at #1 tdc on compression stroke (find compression stroke by removing # 1 spark plug and holding the hole plugged, the feel of compression is obvious), the timing pin is removed from its tapped hole, reversed, and put back in. it's then used to feel for a detent or "niche" in the cam gear as you turn the engine slowly with the hand crank.a caveat---read an earlier notice here about enlarging this detent on some replacement time gears. i think it helps to remove all the spark plugs instead of #1 only for timing as this helps when turning the engine slowly and carefully tofeel the pin fall into the detent. it's easy to go right past the detent so don't feel badly if it takes several tries before you get it right

when i first wrote this notice, i made reference to placing one's digital extremity, which i referred to as a f*ng*rtip in the location from which the #1 sparkplug had been removed. a "censor block" notice came up which informed me clearly and in no uncertain terms that i would not be permitted to place "offensive material" here. i'm really embara**ed and promise to be more careful in future, but, oh my, whatever could that programmer have been thinking??!!
