Hugh-
I had the same problem with a reproduction switch.The copper contact arm was not "springy" enough - too soft a temper.You could try to retemper the arm (heat to dull red and let cool slowly) or replace the switch with a good used original one.The originals had a deeper cover than some repros and allowed more room for the arm to spring back after making contact.
