It sounds like the - or grounding side of the coil is going to ground (or shorted)

You need to trace the wire from the coil to the ignition switch, to the distributor.... or just the reverse

One of the simplest field fixes is to disconnect the - wire from the coil and the unscrew the armored cable connection from the distributor and insert a temporary replacement wire directly from the - side of the coil into the base of the distributor.... I have oa jumper wire that screws into the distributor and has an alligator clip on the other end to attach to the coil terminal (I used a replacement ignition cable like those sold through a Model A parts supplier.)

With this in place if the car runs satifactorily.... your problem is in the ignition switch circuit.....

if the problem is still there...... the distributor is probably where the difficulty exists.....

In the distributor it could be a bad condensor, points stuck shut and not opening, frayed wires touching the casting, or others......

Removal and inspection of the distributor is best.....

For touring a jumper wire and a spare distributor will generally get you back home.....

I'm sure others will have some even better tips than this.... good luck
