two possibilities---if your threads are only slightly damaged you may be able to clean them by making an improvised tap. this is a spare plug into which you file (with a small triangular file) a notch like one flute of a tap, or ask at a parts house if they might have one of the old style repair plugs. these are .010 or so oversize, hardened, and notched on the end to cut their own oversize thread.
