George,
I bought my 31 Roadster through an ad in Hemmings about a year and a half ago.I never saw the car before purchase but the owner did send me a half dozen pictures of it.I asked a lot of questions and felt he was giving me straight answers. He even told me the car wasn't in as good shape as it looked in the pictures he was sending. The car was a driver that had always been driven -- never stored, never shown. It had been maintained for driving with no modifications from stock condition. He delivered it to me for I think 60 cents/mile which is probably about the going rate for transport(I'm in Michigan, the car was in Missouri).I'm restoring it now and at no time have I been disappointed with the purchase.I was probably lucky because there is a real horror story of a car purchased sight unseen in the latest issue of the 'Model A News'.I must say I was really nervous until this car arrived on a trailer in front of my house.I'd like to hear other peoples stories about buying a car this way.Good luck!
