AW,

I also use a 160 degree thermostat and the spring and element end or pipe end face the block. Put it below the radiator pipe just about half way down. I do recommend using an outside clamp since the force of the water will push the termostat up to the radiator pipe anyway, But may want to push water around it after the rubber tube expands.

I recieved the most benefit from this type of termostat in the summer. Yes, the engine did warm up faster which is what I wanted, but it also ran cooler as well.

On a one day 225 mile round trip this last summer, during 90+ weather some of which was driving up hill, I encountered no overheating problems. You will also find that your car will use "less" water and will discharge some until it finds it's own level, so don't become alarmed.

After you install and run it for a day or so, check the center clamp for too little or too much tightness.

Good Luck
Rick
