G'Day Wade,
Interesting!!!, so how does one change from one to the other?. The answer is that this "theory" is totally untrue. The function of the differential is to transfer power from the transmission, via the crown wheel & pinion through a right angle to both wheels. The axle shafts have a sun gear on the inner or differential side which is driven by the planet gears via a spider attached to the crown wheel carrier housing. This system provides equal power to both rear wheels & allows the inner wheel on a tight turn to rotate at a slower speed than the outside wheel, or vice-versa depending how you wish to look at it. This is necessary because the outer wheel of the vehicle must always scribe the larger arc & so must travel further & faster than the inner wheel to prevent any scuffing of the tyres. Following the laws of physics, the transmitted power will of course take the least line of resisitance, hence when one wheel has no traction it will spin whilst the opposite wheel remains stationary along with the vehicle. If the vehicle is raised at the rear, with the transmission in gear, the action of the differential can be seen by turning either rear wheel in any direction which will cause the other wheel to turn in the opposite direction. I hope this solves & doesn't add to the confusion.

: Hey! How many of you guy's knew that the left rear wheel is the drive wheel and the rightwheel is reverse? Is this so?
