Paul,
Glad to hear you are making progress. Let me try to address only your last two questions. The Model A Mechanics Handbook by Les Andrews has a picture of a vavle spring compressor on page 1-124. In oreder to remove the valves, you'll need to remove the split valve guides as the valve stems are mushroomed on the lower end. There is a special tool for valve guide removal.
-------------------
: Also, can anyone tell me what kind of valve spring compresser tool I need to get for my valve job? And what kind of abrasive compound?
The adjustable lifters/tappets can be difficult to adjust. I say this because the gap is tested with valves seated. When they are seated some of the adjusters are below the lifter bosses in the block. Page 338 of the the Service Bulletins gives the techinque for adjusting the lifters. If the adjustments are below the bosses, you take maesurements from all eight valves following the Bulletins. Write these down and note which need to be adjusted. Rotate the engine until those valves are open and make an adjustment, then rotate the engine until the valve is closed and take another measurement. Repeat this until all vavles are gapped. Les Andrews recommends .015 inches for the exhausts and .013 for the intakes. I sent you the order of the valves (intakes and exhausts) via separate e mail.
--------------------
: Finally, there are apparently adjustable tappets in this engine. I don't know how to adjust them. Can someone describe the process? Is this a locking nut system? Is 0.012"-0.015" the desired gap?

Good Luck,
Dave.
