I believe you can still get real non-detergent oils at farm supply stores (Fleet Farm in my area). The jug I have says it is straight mineral oil which I don't believe contains any type of detergents.

As far a synthetics, from a heat standpoint I don't believe there is a lot of advantage, but at $1200 for a rebuilt engine from the catalog, a few extra $$ for synthetic seems like cheep insurance to me.Synthetics are also detergent type oils so as everyone has said, change it often. We use synthetics up here in the land of ice and snow so the engine cranks when it gets to the negative numbers, and to get lubrication to the critical parts quicker in the cold, although I haven't seen anyone driving an A around in the snow lately (but I have heard that they would go through the snow pretty darn well).I guess for a shot at better lubrication quicker after starting I would try synthetic, if the price bothers you a blend should give you about the same results for less $$.

As a matter of fact, Ford bought Mazda in the early 80's, so maybe Henry didn't build the RX7, but Ford did :-)))
