Benny,
Actually, the cracks you have are the most common. They also crack around the perimeter of the case. You've had a lot of good advice given you. I've cold welded a Fairmont engine and it's been great for a few years now, but I wasn't dealing with two parallel machined surfaces either! If you can't find a good housing (Swap meet test is to hang them by and ear and strike them to see if they ring, cracked ones won't or will sound 'funny') then I would carefully clean the housing, have a machine shop magniflux so you know where the crack really ends and drill a small hole in the end of the crack. That *should* stop it from traveling. Be sure you have the right number of shims under the 'ears' when you re-assemble, so you don't strain it any further.
Good luck, non-cracked ones are hard to find!
David D.
