Steve,
You make a good point.I have rebuilt every component on my brake system (but have yet to test and adjust them).I just hate the idea of steel brake drums...I also don't like the idea of paying $400 for cast iron brake drums... but, the drums are all that I would really have left to buy. This is probably less than what I would spend on the hydraulic conversion, not even counting the time to scrounge parts, rebuild everything, modify them, etc...Plus mechanical brakes are what the car came with and there's something to be said for that.

Someetimes I get an idea in my head and can't see the forest for the trees...Thanks for jump starting my brain for me!

: Bobby,

: I once thought that hydraulics were the panacea for Model A brakes. However, with some of the vintage backing plates and drums becoming very difficult to find I decided to rebuildthe mechanical brake system.First you need to get a copy of the excellant video tape "How to Stop On a Dime". (Bratton's, Snyder's, most any of the parts house will have it.Then watch it carefully (multiple times). If you follow the steps shown you will have brakes that will work very well for a model A.I can slide all four wheels with very little effort.
: You will need a little time to get used to adjusting them(to avoid pulling to one side. This sou7nds much worse than it is.After rebuilding my brakes, I ran them about 1500 miles and then readjusted them. After the second adjustment they were even better.I opted for the new cast iron brake drums that are available. They add to the cost but are worth every dime spent.I think you can rebuild the original system for the same or less money than going to hydraulics and have excellant brakes while helping to maintain the value and character of your car.Best of luck whichever way you go.

: Regards.
: Steve
