: Is there a modern four speed transmission that is a reasonable fit for a Model A?How much is entailed in making such a conversion? It seems to me that if one were available it would be a lot simpler than installing an overdrive...am I correct?

Hello tony, A transmission shop in Ft. Worth, Texas modifys
a Ford small truck 4 speed overdrive transmission for use in
a model a, and several folks in this area use them and swear
by their performance. I looked at the unit but decided on the
Mitchell overdrive because you can split gears. I have driven
a 31 / 4 door with the modified 4 speed and it is as smooth as
silk. You use the model a clutch and have to remove some metal from the cross member, but not much, to make it fit. A
drive shaft conversion of some type is included. The cost of
the complete unit was $1850 a few months ago. Let me know if
you want his number and I will get it for you.
